Ukulele is one of the cheaper instruments and you can start to get notes out of it in a very short time. Of course as with any skill practice makes perfect (or at least a lot better).
You do have to put time in to learning, but 5-10 minutes a day is enough to show a change over time.
And it's fun! And portable. Apart from the tin whistle and harmonica it's probable the smallest / lightest instrument available.
