Monday
Up at 6:30 and caught the 16th St Mall bus (they are running more frequently again) to the Corner Bakery Cafe 500 16th St. After checking inside decided to wait outside for the others. when
nbarber and
growlycub arrived. We decided to go in and order, (I had the Farmer's Scrambler and coffee $7.65) which was a good plan since
stoutfellow didn't arrive til 7:30, due to a misread faulty alarm clock. Anyway we chatted and drank coffee until 9:05 when we left and said our good byes. Hopefully to meet up next year in Montreal.
I then found the post office, where I finally posted the cards I'd bought last week (and then lost with my bag!) Postage to the UK for 4 items was $3.76 which was twice what I paid for the materials! Postcards had minimal info as all the details are here on livejournal!
At this point (10am) I really needed to finish off (at least the conrep part) of my blog, so caught the free bus to the Corner Bakery Cafe at 1147 16th St for a coffee and rustic cherry pie ($4.41) my credit card has really been my friend, since HSBC declined to let me get any cash from the ATM. But more importantly, free power and WiFi! (Though for some reason the WiFi isn't working at the moment). I did get access via the free "DownTown Dever WiFi" (but it seems to require Java so won't work on Palm.)
Anyone who I met and haven't mentioned, or who is on LJ but whose name I missed please let me know, so I can update this when I get home.
So I spent just over 2 hours at the Corner Bakery Cafe, but when the lunch crowd started arriving I decided to leave. First I went to Market St station to check out times to the Airport (DIA) and it seems there is an hourly service at 25 mins past the hour. So on Thursday I need to be there by 9am.
I then caught the free bus in the other direction to the terminus at Civic Center Station, then walked the couple of blocks, in the hot mid day sun, to the Denver Public Library a large fairly new building, again with free wifi. I'm continuing to update my blog off line, a large part of the last three days of material have been written today, so with convention memory blur there may be stuff missing. This is however the most complete conrep I've done (in 29 years) and the most rapidly finished.
Spent the next two hours or so updating and uploading my blog pages, in the library. Any errors and links will have to wait til I get home, and access to a larger screen than my eeePC. I've got a mild headache, so I'm stopping for the moment.
After leaving the library I had a wander, had a look at the Denver Art Museum, a work of art in itself, but it was closed on Monday, then to the Colorado History Museum, which was closing in 10 minutes! I did have a look at the family photo display in the lobby.
I then walked to the Colorado State Capitol building, and climbed the steps to stand on the one marked "One Mile Above Sea Level". It occurred to me that some of the fans in the Sheraton Hotel would be eligible for the Mile Hi club ;-)
Anyway with the mild headache I returned to Walgreens and got 100 generic Headache Relief pills. In the UK you can't buy that many in one go! I also bought a pint of Rocky Road ice cream (Chocolate ice cream, with almonds and marshmallows). I managed to blag a spoon at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, I did buy a single chocolate there too, which was expensive, but nice. It started to drizzle as I was finishing my ice cream so decided to head hostelward, I did check out the Cinema, but there were no films I really wanted to see (at $9 a showing) and I left via Barnes and Noble. I was strong and didn't buy any books. The lack of space in my bags and the cheap price at amazon.co.uk were the real deciding factors though!
By the time I got back to the hostel the threatening rain had dispersed so I sat outside (after letting the reception staff know I'd got my bag and passport back) and read for a while, then the older man on reception came out for a smoke and we talked books for a while. When it started to get dark I went to bed and read til 11:00 when I shut my eyes for sleep.
