After working in the morning I took the afternoon off so I could go to the matinee performance of Avenue Q. I went via Forbidden Planet, I bought a few books as usual, as it's just down the road from the Noel Coward Theatre, where I picked up my ticket (in the Royal Circle). wandered around a bit before settling down in the local library to read for an hour or so.

At 5:00pm the theatre opened it's doors, I bought a program and I found my seat. The performance stated just after 5:30 and was brilliant. The shortest description for it is "the Muppets for Adults" and it's certainly isn't a production for children. The last time I saw puppets on stage as part of the live performance was in "His Dark Materials" at the National Theatre. But there the puppeteers were invisible, dressed as ninjas! In Avenue Q while the people performing the puppets were all in grey, they were certainly visible. Each puppet wrangler provided two characters and while some puppets were handled by different people, they were always voices by the same person, who was usually in control.

But the most important thing about it was the fun all the performers seems to be having, and that the puppets came alive as characters in their own right.

Well worth going to see.
