Weekend TV and movies

This last weekend was the first one where I was home alone (with no expectation of returning lodgers) for two years, and I found it more memorable than most. To start with I've still got that viral infection...
Anyway the best thing on TV on Saturday was the Strictly Come Dancing semi-final on BBC1. The standard of the dancing this year has been exceptional, with the first score of 40/40 awarded outside a final or special ever! I wouldn't have wanted to judge, it was so close. And then we had to wait 24 hours for the results..
Sunday I got up earlier than usual as I had booked a double bill at the local cinema. But fist I finally got to see the Season 2 finale of "A Town Called Eureka" which was excellent as usual. Eureka is the only show that no mater how many times I watch an episode I still get something new out of it.
Anyway I walked into town (freezing cold though it was) and saw the first file which was Disney's Enchanted (PG) which had nothing original as far as plot, character r anything else apart from the original premise "What would happen if Disney cartoon character came to the real world?" It was light hearted fun even so.
The Golden Compass (PG) based on the best selling novel by Philip Pulman was a much weightier tale, encompassing parallel worlds, particle theory, politics, ethics and theological dogma! If it's a good translation of the book I can't really say as I last read it 10 years ago and my last contact was at the National Theatre nearly 3 years back. But the acting was first class and the SFX were stunning. I just hope they get enough sales to allow them to film books 2 and 3
